Incorporated on August 4, 1886, the Gilpin Tramway Company served as the main artery for the flow of ore from the mining districts around Central City to the mills and smelters at Black Hawk, from 1887 until it was abandoned in 1917. Throughout it's lifetime the Gilpin Tramway twisted and turned it's way over twenty some miles of track, powered by Shay locomotives. At the expiration of it's charter at midnight on July 29, 1906, the Gilpin Tramway ceased to exist. In anticipation of this expiration, the Colorado & Southern Railway - which had acquired the tramway sometime after May 8, 1906 - organized a new company - The Gilpin Railroad Company - which was incorporated on July 24, 1906. The Colorado & Southern Railway operated the Gilpin Railroad until a court decree ordering the sale of this unique two-foot gauge railway was signed on April 24, 1917. The entire property of the Gilpin Railroad was sold as junk to A.H. Radestky at a sale held on June 2, 1917, and a sheriff's deed was executed on the same date. The court order confirming this sale was signed on June 19, 1917. Thus Colorado's only two-foot gauge railway - The Gilpin Tramway( or Railroad ) - passed into history after thirty-one years of operation.ANNUAL MEETThe 2nd annual meet will be July 27th 2002, at the Idaho Springs, CO, visitors center.
